Life
skills education entails, bringing the lived reality of adolescents in
educational discourse, providing opportunity for applying knowledge in
decision-making and giving sufficient practice for this, so that it
acquires the status of skills. SANDHAN's extensive action research and
field trails have affirmed its widely shared belief that life skill
education can be an effective tool for empowerment of adolescents. The
outcome of these collective efforts at many levels has led to the
evolution of life skill education training module, both in English and
Hindi. This module attempts to promote reflective skills, negotiating
skills, social skills in adolescents in 5 major areas of identity,
relationship, health, problem solving and new roles in future.
Approximately 22000 copies of the module were published and distributed in
all states of India through the Ministry of Youth Affairs.
SANDHAN has its strength in bringing in the Situational Analysis of
adolescents, research and training techniques evolved through Doosra
Dashak experience. Insights from these have helped SANDHAN to develop LSE
curriculum for Mahila Samakhya (MS). The curriculum specifically addresses
the issues of understanding equality and deals with four basic components
of intent, content, pedagogy and evaluation. A critical component of the
curriculum is health that deals with issues such as sexual and
reproductive health, sexual violence, addictions etc. In addition to this,
the curriculum covers a broad range of issues that may enable girls to
feel as equals. These include, for example, rediscovering oneself and the
environment, dealing with relationships, communication, violence, process
of problem solving, exploring new future; some of the crucial components
related to LSE and equality.
So far SANDHAN has directly interacted with approximately- 4000
adolescents (both out of school and in school through various forums of
community based organizations) and 1000 teachers and functionaries
(including formal government school teachers and KGBV teachers). Life
Skill education is getting increased recognition in Educational framework.
This has generated demand for training; also brought to surface the need
for weaving Life Skill Education with the educational curriculum. This is
one of SANDHAN’s current preoccupations.
